Carrie Underwood’s parents said their daughter was an active and engaged citizen who had a history of mental health issues and was a victim of sexual assault.
But now, the 25-year-old actress, whose breakout role in the 2017 hit “Fifty Shades Darker” is based on her own personal story, has made headlines for a number of reasons, including the recent arrest of a California man who has been charged with the death of her unborn child.
“She’s one of the best stars that we have in Hollywood right now,” said Debbie Underwood, Carrie’s mother.
“She’s the biggest star in Hollywood.
And I think she’s doing the best that she can.”
Underwood, who has played Carrie Fisher, has not taken the news of her daughter’s death in stride.
“It was devastating.
She’s one my favorites.
I’m very upset,” she said.
“I just wish that I could have stayed with her.
But I have a family.
I have two kids, so I have to take care of my family.”
Underwoods’ father, Dave, told The Associated Press that he’s still trying to wrap his head around what happened.
“I feel very guilty.
I think it’s horrible that this happened to her,” Dave Underwood said.”
The last thing I want to do is be selfish, and say I wish she was gone,” he said.
The news of Carrie Underwoods death has reignited the debate about concealed carry in the U.S.
Underwood has been carrying a concealed handgun for about six years now.
She said she wanted to be ready for whatever life throws at her, including her daughter, but that she’s worried about how people would react to her carrying a weapon.
“If you’re the target of some sort of crime or some sort a tragedy, I think you need to carry a gun,” she told reporters.
“If there’s a threat to your safety, you need a gun.”
A spokesperson for the California Department of Justice told The AP the department has no record of Carrie Fisher ever being convicted of a crime.
Carrie Fisher died in July 2018 after an apparent suicide.
She is survived by her husband of 13 years, Robert Lasseter, as well as her sister, Jana, and a brother, Andrew.ABC News’ Mike Bresnahan contributed to this report.
